oceanofmind: What does that statement mean, “salvation is here and now”? I don’t understand it. Nest-y
Okay. Okay. About feeling all nesting. While the verdict is out on whether art imitates life or life imitates art, I blame my nesting desires upon years of reading purloined copies of House Beautiful and Better Homes and Gardens at my grandmother’s house as well as my current age-confused enchantment with blogs which, at least on the surface, focus on topics that should not even be of my...

Winter Post-Christmas
I would not be surprised if I have seasonal depression of sorts. That is, MOST years. Right now I just feel all nest-y. I got some commercial kitchen-quality Mundial knives for Christmas, and I am pondering exchanging the two largest (a giant chef’s knife and a boning knife) for a 8” Global or Wustof or maybe a Shun. Oh, Japanese steel, you are winning me over. But this is an old and...

“Applicant: So what’s the next step if I pass this round of interviews? P: You would be crazy to take this job. Applicant: What?! P: I am looking at you and you’re so full of promise! You can do anything you want. Think of the most wonderful job you can possibly imagine and even if it seems totally far fetched, find out who’s in charge and cold call them. You have...

With paranoia on my heels, will you love me still?
Existentialism is often construed as narrowly egocentric, which may invoke a sort of indulgent paranoia over the self on one end, or a fierce will to affirm oneself in defiance of reality at the other. But these features neglect a very crucial aspect of the reality of our existence: as encountering other bodies and beings—and potentially understanding these as other selves. The founding of...

Trickiness.
So, Williams-Sonoma is running this promotion (I think it is still going on) that for every $50 spent there, you’ll get a $10 gift card in return. I’m contemplating buying a mixer. And then buying the chef’s knife. I feel really strange when I get close to actually doing something I had projected myself doing in the future for a long time.

Bad Entrepreneurial Idea #12038
You guys. What if. I got the bike. AND the mixer. And a freaky backpack contraption or special basket to carry my mixer on my person/bike? I could come to your very own house and bake cookies and cakes and pies in your very own home. Absolutely no chance of business failure or encountering creepiness, right?!

Staving off winter lethargy
I’ve been feeling unusually tired since coming home. The fault may lie in sleeping too much, or the constant grey skies, or that I allegedly have a potassium deficiency and I haven’t taken my supplements (woops) in… a while. So, with that in mind, I made myself a yummy protein-y banana chocolate PB smoothie and I am hoping it wakes me up before the chill of it makes me even...

It's past 3 am, and I haven't written a thing.
My mind is gnawing at me. What’s so anxiety-inducing that I can’t just slog through this paper like any typical college student?  I am a bit glad the semester is drawing to a close. It hasn’t been, subjectively, one of the worse semesters for me—in fact, there are very distinct wonder parts, despite a shabby beginning. I just want to stow away at home, baking good things...

Existentialism and Procrastination: Bad Faith →
fuckyeahexistentialism: Bad faith can infect our entire lives. We can live in bad faith. When we do, procrastination may define our very being. We put off everything, victim to the situation, unwilling to accept responsibility for who we are and our lives. We even try to excuse ourselves saying, “it’s just the way I am.” Sadly, this is just another example of living in bad faith; a futile...

The Spirit is Too Blunt an Instrument
The spirit is too blunt an instrument to have made this baby. Nothing so unskilful as human passions could have managed the intricate exacting particulars: the tiny blind bones with their manipulating tendons, the knee and the knucklebones, the resilient fine meshings of ganglia and vertebrae, the chain of the difficult spine. Observe the distinct eyelashes and sharp crescent fingernails, the...

Simple Gifts
I am thankful that it’s Thursday, and I am done with all my written finals, even though I have a few papers to finish. But I’m lying in bed still, and the sun is streaming in through my window blinds and through my paper Christmas decorations that hang like stained glass. I’m cozy in worn cotton sheets, and my boyfriend called to see if I’d like to go on a walk with him,...

A truffle a day.
I made chocolate ganache a couple of nights ago, and Griffin and I rolled the cooled ganache into balls and in some cocoa powder. So now, my room smells like dark chocolate, and I eat a chocolate truffle every morning and night. Can I make hot cocoa with steaming whole milk over a few truffles? Definitely worth a shot.
